Gigabyte AORUS FI27Q-P, World’s First HBR 3 Display

A promise was made along with the arrival of the DP 1.3 specification; the ability to use high refresh rates, with HDR and 10-bit colour enabled simultaneously, on screens with a resolution higher than 1080p.  Finally this promise has been fulfilled by Gigabyte with their AORUS FI27Q-P, a 27″ 2560×1440 display with a peak refresh rate of 165Hz that is both G-SYNC and Freesync 2 compatible, 10-bit colour and something close to but not quite HDR400; the peak brightness is rated 350cd/m2.

In order to get the most out of the monitor you will need to make sure your DP cable is rated for HBR3 and that your pre-Turing NVIDIA card has had a firmware update; AMD users with an RX 480 or newer are already fully compatible.   Kitguru gave this monitor a shot and were impressed overall with the smoothness and response when gaming.  They did manage to increase the peak brightness to 433.5cd/m2 by using the OSD to increase the brightness setting on the monitor to 100%.

If you want proper colour reproduction you will need to calibrate the display, though for most the 100% sRGB, 90% AdobeRGB, 95% P3 that it provides out of the box will be accurate enough for use.  You can probably already see the one major drawback to this display; it runs £459.95 or about $500US.
