NVIDIA Versus AMD In A Best Of 50 Competition

TechPowerUp continues it’s tradition of testing relative GPU performance across 50 different games, a rather daunting task when you consider it.  This best of 50 competition, aka the TPU50, compares NVIDIA’s barely available RTX 3080 to AMD’s all but unobtainable RX 5800XT.

The games go from recent releases to ones first launched in 2017 and encompass Vulkan, DX11 and DX12 APIs and a comprehensive assortment of game engines.  The test system is powered by a Ryzen 7 5800X, an EVGA X570 Dark and 16GB of DDR4-4000 with the Infinity Fabric set to 2000MHz for a 1:1 ratio.  The tests were run at 1080p, 1440p and 4K with the 21.10.3 Beta driver from AMD and 496.49 WHQL from NVIDIA.

If you are looking for an overall score, then the RTX 3080 averages 2.1% better at 4K, 0% at 1440p, and 1.2% at Full HD, but that is not the full story.  They took the time to break down results by API, year of game release and several other variables as well which could help you determine which card is best for what you intend to do.  One other finding of note, since it’s release the RX 6800 XT has been quickly narrowing that performance gap and seems to be headed for parity.
